The BC RCMP hires former [retired] RCMP and municipal police officers in good standing, and provides them with opportunities to:

• Mentor less experienced police officers
• Be an operational resource for detachments/units
• Assist with seasonal policing, special events, emergencies and training

Who are Reserve Constables?

In BC there are approximately 100 Reserve Constables, hired as federal government contractors. On-duty Reserve Constables hold the powers and authorities of police officers, and serve in uniform and plain clothes.

What do Reserve Constables do?

BC RCMP Reserve Constables have a wide range of knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and must maintain their fitness for duty. Reserve Constables provide commanders with a flexible resource option in filling short-term staffing vacancies, for example:

• Planned and predictable annual leave or other leave in Northern or isolated Detachments where the absence of even one employee can have a significant impact on service delivery;
• Support for seasonal policing pressures such as Marine Patrol or Ski Patrol;
• Specialized skills including Forensic Identification Section, Surveillance, Traffic Enforcement and Air Services to name a few.

I am an RCMP member about to retire, or who has retired/I am a retired member of another Canadian police department. How do I apply?

Contact the Reserve Program Coordinator before you leave the RCMP or within three years after you retire/resign. Reserve Constable applicants are required to have:

• An updated Security Clearance;
• Standard First Aid Certificate;
• An Operational Personal Health Assessment
