The Dawson Creek RCMP have received several reports of residents who have fallen victim to recent scams. Police urge residents to remain vigilant and critical in situations where they may be preyed on by scammers.

Recent reports to police have indicated that scammers reach out to their victims claiming to be businesses, employers or members of various government bodies. Scammers will often reach out via text, phone call or email where their identity cannot be verified.

Scams can take many different forms including offering the victim a job, telling the victim something is wrong with an online subscription or anticipated delivery, or demanding the victim pay to avoid legal consequences.

Often scammers will request payment in the form of crypto-currency or gift cards. It is important to remember that legitimate businesses or government bodies will never request payment by these means. Always be critical if anyone reaches out to you requesting any sort of payment when their identity cannot be verified.

Other signs of a scam include using threatening language, sending a link to click on, asking for personal or financial information or demanding immediate payment.

Please contact the Dawson Creek RCMP at 250-784-3700 or if you receive any potential scams or fall victim to a scam.
