Quadra RCMP weekly report October 2nd to October 8th

Break and enter

On October 3rd, a homeowner on Cortes Island advised that his seasonal residence was broken into sometime in the last two weeks. The complainant advised that the pad lock to an exterior basement door had been cut and his generator was missing. While officers were on their way to the call, they were advised from the owner that a friend had grabbed the generator in an emergency to help run a pump for a sinking boat. The owner happily reported that the generator was returned and police attendance was not required.

Vehicle collision

In the late evening of October 3rd, Quadra RCMP received a report of a car crash in the North end of the Island. The complainant advised an unknown car had crashed into their neighbour's yard. Officers arrived on scene and located the car in a front yard on top of a tree stump. The car had failed to stop for the corner and crashed into a tree, resulting in the tree being severed in half. An Approved Screen Device (ASD) was administrated to the driver resulting in two "Fail" results. The driver's vehicle was impounded for 30 days and her driver license was revoked for 90 days. All parties on scene, save the tree, were uninjured.

Fraud report

On October 5th, Quadra RCMP received a report of a phone scam fraud. The complainant reported that she received a call that her son was in an accident and in legal trouble. Another man came onto the phone claiming to be a lawyer and convinced the victim to send $800 by e-transfer for bail money. Only after sending the money and following up with family members did the victim realize she had been scammed. The matter is still under investigation. 

This scam has been around for a long time with the newest twist being a lawyer or bail bondsmen asking for money. "This story, or any variation of it, is a scam. The best course of action is to hang up and not engage," says Quadra RCMP Media Relations Officer Constable Rebekah Draht.

Should one receive such a call, there is no need to report it to police unless you have provided personal information or money. Complaints are encouraged to report such incidents to the Canadian Anti Fraud Center. 

Found stolen property

On October 5th, Quadra RCMP received a report of possible found stolen property. The complainant advised that an individual that had since been evicted had left behind an outboard motor. The motor was not familiar to anybody else on the property. Officers executed a search warrant and seized the motor, which was confirmed as stolen. The incident is still under investigation and an update will be provided when possible.
