Attempted extortion over email

2023-4232

On Friday, September 1, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer received a report from a 73-year-old Fruitvale woman that she was the target of an email fraud, in Fruitvale, BC. The woman had received an email demanding $1000 of electronic funds be sent to the sender; otherwise, the sender would infect her computer with a computer virus. The woman contacted the Trail RCMP for guidance before taking any action.

The officer informed the woman that this was a common phishing fraud that is often targeted towards senior citizens in the community. The officer advised her to delete and block the emails from the sender, and to never reply to this kind of scam.

Email fraud is widespread in our society and costs all of us billions of dollars every year. The 74-year-old Fruitvale woman took the correct course of action by contacting the Trail Detachment for advice and not replying to the mail. If you are unsure about an electronic message you received, please contact the Trail Detachment at 250-364-255 to discuss it with an officer. Says Sgt. Wicentowich
