On March 27, 2021 the Port Alberni RCMP commenced a homicide investigation after 20-year-old Clifton Johnston was located deceased in the 3500 block of 4 Avenue in Port Alberni.
On July 7, 2023, the male, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was convicted of Second-Degree Murder, and received a seven-year sentence after pleading guilty.

The 17-year-old Port Alberni male has been sentenced to four years in a correctional facility and three years in community with release conditions and will be closely supervised.
