File # 2023-12025

On November 14, 2023, at 1:46pm, the Fort St John RCMP received a report of a man showing off a pistol in the area of 100th Street and 99th Avenue, Fort St John, BC.

While Fort St John RCMP frontline police officers were enroute, information was received that the man had entered a business in the strip mall in the area of 100th Street and 98A Avenue.

At 1:49pm, frontline police officers arrived on scene and observed a man in the business matching the suspect description received by police.

With consideration for the safety of the public, frontline police officers entered the business and conducted a high risk take down at gun point with the suspect. During the search of the suspect, metal 1911 type pistol was located. The pistol was later determined to be a pellet gun.

Frontline police officers identified the man who was known to police as Raymond Peterkin, who was also wanted on an outstanding warrant. Peterkin was arrested on his outstanding warrant as well as for Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and for Breach of Release Order as Peterkin was on a condition not to possess any weapons.

With some pellet and airsoft guns it is very difficult to differentiate between replica and real as many are created to look like the real deal, said Constable Chad Neustaeter, Media Relations Officer for the Fort St John RCMP. Carrying and displaying any firearm in public raises significant safety concerns from the public and police which creates an unnecessary and potentially dangerous situations especially after the recent shots fired incidents Fort St John has experienced.

Raymond Peterkin was transported to the detachment and held for court where he was remanded until November 15, 2023.

On November 15, 2023, Peterkin was released by the courts on a Release Order with a future court date of November 20, 2023.
