West Shore RCMP Community and Indigenous Police Units took over Spencer Middle School’s breakfast program this week.

The breakfast program is facilitated by a local non-profit youth organization with the help of a parent volunteer and funded by Student Affordability Fund through the Ministry of Education and Child Care. The non-profit organization has been working with Spencer Middle School for over a decade to provide breakfast along with a calm, safe space to start the day. It runs every school day from 8:00-9:00 am.

The Breakfast Program was going to temporality shut down for a few days this week due to some scheduling conflicts. West Shore RCMP School Liaison officers heard about this during a regular school visit and decided to step forward and keep the program running without any gaps, said Cst. John Varley, West Shore RCMP Community Police Officer. How you start your morning can have a big impact on the rest of your day, as it turns out, it made their day as well as ours.

Cst. Varley is picture below playing an intense game of Sorry!, which he eventually won:

The Breakfast Program was a big hit and saw more kids attend then usual, however, we blame most of that on adding doughnuts as a treat to the regular breakfast food line up and spending some time playing friendly board games with the students before class.
