The Tk’emlúps Rural RCMP Detachment and the Southeast District General Investigation Services are investigating the cause of an ammonia leak that sadly resulted in the death of one person.

On May 26, 2022, around 10:30 a.m., police responded to the area of Sarcee Street East in the Mount Paul Industrial Park to assist Kamloops Fire and Rescue with a leak reported in the area. Traffic was redirected while nearby businesses were evacuated. One person was transported to hospital from the initial incident and sadly succumbed to his injuries. At least two more people were medically assessed on scene.

With public safety secured now, police will be conducting a parallel investigation to that of WorkSafe BC to establish what led to the fatal leak, said Constable Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson.

The BC Coroner’s Service will also be conducting a concurrent investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to please contact the Tk’emlúps Rural RCMP at 250-314-1800 and reference file 2022-17544.
