The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Burnaby where a male suffered serious injuries.

On February 27, 2023, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Burnaby RCMP received a report of a domestic disturbance, where a lone male had barricaded himself in a residence with reported weapons.

Frontline officers set up containment on the home and requested the assistance of the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team (LMD IERT) and the Integrated Crisis Negotiation Team (ICNT).

Attempts to negotiate and deescalate the situation were unsuccessful, and shortly after 11:40 p.m. the male attempted to lower himself from a third story window. He was arrested at ground level with the assistance of a police dog and taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The IIO BC is investigating police actions in the incident. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.

Please note that all aspects and circumstances of this incident will be the subject of independent investigation by the IIO BC. For more information about the IIO BC and media updates, you can visit its website at www.iiobc.ca.
