File # 2022-982

Three people have been arrested after a demonstration shut down traffic on the Willingdon off-ramp from Highway 1 on Monday morning, causing traffic delays and safety concerns.

A group of about a dozen people blocked the westbound off-ramp around 7:45 a.m. The closure quickly created a significant traffic backup on Highway 1 during the morning commute.

During the demonstration there were reports that one person had climbed onto the hood of a vehicle that had been forcibly stopped on the off-ramp.

Given the safety concerns, Burnaby RCMP gave demonstrators an opportunity to leave the area on their own. Three people who refused to leave were arrested.

Demonstrators have a right to lawful, peaceful and safe protest, but this demonstration caused significant safety concerns for those demonstrating and for the travelling public, said Cpl. Mike Kalanj with Burnaby RCMP.

The three people who were arrested are being released with court dates.

The demonstration was cleared by about 8:05 a.m., with traffic flow returning to normal shortly after.
