Burnaby RCMP is activating its Extreme Heat Response Plan due to a heatwave expected to bring high, and potentially dangerous, temperatures to the Lower Mainland starting Wednesday.

Burnaby RCMP will be doing proactive public awareness and outreach patrols over the coming days to connect homeless and vulnerable community members, as well as others who may need a safe place to cool down, with cooling location information and other available resources.

The City of Burnaby will be operating four cooling locations starting Wednesday, August 11. They will operate between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

North Burnaby
• Cameron Community Centre (9523 Cameron Street)
• Eileen Dailly Leisure Pool (240 Willingdon Avenue)

South Burnaby
• Bonsor Recreation Complex (6550 Bonsor Avenue)
• Edmonds Community Centre (7433 Edmonds Street)

The Society to End Homelessness in Burnaby will also be operating a pop-up cooling station at Civic Square, near Central Boulevard and MacKay Avenue starting Wednesday, August 11.

This is the third time this summer that Burnaby RCMP has activated its Extreme Heat Response Plan.

We are once again urging people to check on one another, especially seniors and those with underlying health concerns. There are safe places to escape the heat, said Cpl. Mike Kalanj with Burnaby RCMP.

Burnaby RCMP is also urging families to make sure windows are secure, as they can be dangerous for children.

Pets should not be left in vehicles during the hot weather. Animals in distress can be reported to police or the SPCA Provincial Call Centre at 1-855-622-7722.

To stay safe in the heat, Fraser Health suggests staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activities during the day, and self-monitoring for signs of heat-related illness. Read more tips here
