game on for Burnaby RCMP’s soccer camp this year, with the four-day camp for youth resuming in August after a one year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The camp will take place on August 10 and 11 at Edmonds Park, and on August 17 and 18 at Confederation Park, allowing 100 local children and teens to hit the field for two days each.
The free camp is designed to build soccer and teamwork skills, with RCMP officers and volunteers providing coaching to pre-registered participants between eight and 13-years-old.
This year’s camp will also include expert instruction from a former professional soccer player who grew up in Burnaby.
Cst. Dave Morris, who now works with Burnaby RCMP’s Youth Section, played for the Vancouver Whitecaps between 1999 and 2007 before starting his policing career.
I can’t think of a better way to connect with local youth from our community than on the soccer field, Cst. Morris said.
This camp lets us break down barriers. It’s not just about soccer, but about making our community stronger, building new skills, and having fun together.
The camp, which was started in Burnaby by Cst. Kwame Amoateng, has continued to grow significantly since its creation in 2017. The 2021 camp is now full.
The demand this year was unprecedented. We have received a lot of positive feedback from families about the opportunity this camp provides for their children, Cst. Morris said.
The camp will follow B.C.’s COVID-19 health guidelines.
Burnaby RCMP Soccer Camp is made possible by a civil forfeiture grant and assistance from the City of Burnaby, which also provides field time. Some local businesses are also contributing by providing lunches and soccer equipment.
This camp shows the best of Burnaby, Cst. Morris said.
We are grateful to the partners that make it possible to put this camp together and provide this unique experience for kids.
