File # 2022-17281, 2022-17313, 2022-17421, 2022-17283
Prince George RCMP has started using the bait bike program to help combat the increase in bike thefts in our community. The program was officially rolled out
at the end of May and has already been a success.
The initiative is being led by the Downtown Safety Unit, whose members noted that a high number of bike thefts occur in the downtown area of Prince George. The bike has been deployed four times so far, resulting in five arrests. All of the suspects are known to police.
We plan to continue deploying the bike throughout the summer months, in an effort to slow this trend,
states Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, Media Relations officer for the Prince George RCMP. One thing we want the public to note is that the thefts all occurred in less than 20 minutes, the fastest coming in at eight minutes. This is a crime of opportunity that does not take very long to execute, so there is not really a
safe window
for leaving a bike unattended.
All five suspects were released on Undertakings with future court dates. The files remain under investigation.
In order to help identify your bike if it is stolen, here is some helpful information you can provide to police:
- Serial number
- Make and model
- Colour
- Any modifications you have made
- Recent pictures of your bike
If you have any information about this or any other criminal offence, please contact the Prince George RCMP at (250)561-3300 or anonymously contact Crime Stoppers at 1(800)222-8477 or online at www.northernbccrimestoppers.ca (English only). You do not have to reveal your identity to Crime Stoppers. If you provide information that leads to an arrest or recovery of stolen property, you could be eligible for a cash reward.
Consider registering your home or business surveillance system with the City of Prince George’s CCTV registry. For more information, visit the City of Prince George website at www.princegeorge.ca/cctv (English only).
