File # 2025-583

BC Prosecution Service has approved charges in a weekend shooting that claimed one life.

Nolan Douglas Schmidt, 23, has been charged with second degree murder in connection with a shooting in the city on Sunday, January 19, 2025. One other person remains in hospital with injuries.

This was not a random attack and those involved are known to each other. Investigators are also looking at other ongoing investigations within the Dawson Creek area and progress continues to be made. We appreciate the support of the community and will continue to welcome any information.

The surge of resources that supported the investigation contributed to an arrest and subsequent charge approval. Additional charges may be possible if supported by further evidence as the investigation moves forward, said Superintendent Sanjaya Wijayakoon of E Division Major Crime.

Schmidt remains in custody pending the results of a court hearing today.

Anyone who has any information that has yet to speak with police is asked to call the Dawson Creek RCMP at (250) 784-3700.
