Mother-son Mounties pair up for bucket-list shift

Mountie of 38 years, Corporal Madonna Saunderson, has one request before hanging up her spurs for retirement… The last of my career bucket list is to work a shift with my son.

Cpl Madonna Saunderson, originally from Newfoundland, has had an impressive journey with the RCMP having joined the Mounties in 1986.

Her first posting landed her in Prince George, BC, where she spent 5 years working General Duty. She transferred to Fraser Lake in 1991 where she was the first female police officer to be posted in that Detachment. She met her husband there and stayed for 7 years. In 1998, Cpl Saunderson transferred back to Prince George with her husband, along with their two-year old and a second child on the way. In Prince George again, Cpl Saunderson worked another 18 years, this time in Traffic Services. It was during this time frame that she promoted from Constable to Corporal and became the road supervisor for the provincial team. After 30 years of uniform and shift work, she transferred into BC RCMP Communications as the Media Relations Officer (MRO) for North District, while remaining in Prince George.

In 2023, her second born, John Saunderson, followed in her footsteps and left for Depot in Regina, Saskatchewan, for training to become a Mountie as well. In January of 2024, Cst John Saunderson was posted to Terrace BC to begin his career with the RCMP.

On October 7, 2024, the mother-son duo partnered up and patrolled the city of Terrace together which was the perfect way to pass the torch on to her son.

I am very proud of John and wish him every success as he follows his dream just as I did all those years ago. It was an honour and pleasure to work a shift with him today, said Cpl Madonna Saunderson, Who knows, maybe one day he will get to pass the same torch on to his son or daughter. I have had a great career and highly recommend it to anyone seeking a career in law enforcement.
