Suspect charged and in custody following an arson investigation in Newton

Surrey RCMP is advising the public that a suspect has been charged and taken into custody for an arson that occurred in June 2024.
On June 20, 2024 at 5:30 pm, Surrey RCMP responded to a structure fire in the 8200-block of King George Boulevard. Upon arrival, a unit in the housing complex was fully engulfed in flames (See Previous Release: Surrey RCMP is investigating a suspicious fire in Newton area)
The investigation was conducted by the Surrey RCMP General Investigation Unit (GIU). On June 28, 2024, the following charges were approved for the accused Steven Evans of Surrey and a warrant was issued for his arrest:
- Two counts of Arson to property
- One count of uttering threats
After extensive search efforts, GIU located the accused on July 12, 2024 and he has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance.
