File # 2023-41616

A 20-year old Nanaimo man is in police custody after an attempted residential break and enter. The incident was reported at approximately 3 AM on Friday December 1st, 2023 in the 100 block of Roberta Road East, in south Nanaimo.

Officers responded after the homeowner called 911 to report finding a male suspect allegedly attempting to gain access to his home from an exterior window. While trying to prevent the suspect from entering his residence, an aluminum baseball bat was brandished and used to assault the homeowner. Officers arrived at the property within minutes, and after a short scuffle, the suspect was arrested and taken into police custody. The homeowner was sustained some bumps and bruises but did not receive any injuries that required medical attention.

This situation is a homeowner’s worst nightmare. Their quick thinking and call to 911 allowed our officers to attend immediately and prevent further intrusion and violence from taking place. It is important to remember that in an emergency your first call should be to 911 so that emergency first responders can help as soon as possible, said Nanaimo R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

The 20-year old male suspect faces criminal charges related to break and enter, assault with a weapon, resist arrest and breach of probation. He was held in custody and is expected to appear in Nanaimo Provincial Court later today.
