Business Watch - Crime Map – March 2020
Business Watch is a partnership between local Burnaby business communities, the City of Burnaby, and the RCMP.
Our goal is to provide tools and resources to help reduce business-related crime. These maps reflect crime trends in the business community. When incidents are reported to police the information is used to deploy resources strategically, identify crime hot spots, and analyze trends and patterns.
The maps are provided as a tool to promote awareness and crime reduction throughout the business communities. Check out the Business Watch website for more information (External link, opens in a new window http://burnaby.ca/businesswatch)

Crime Prevention Tips – Business Break and Enters
- Check the basics: do you have strong locks on the doors? Double cylinder dead bolt lock, which must be opened by a key from either side, is harder to open for burglars.
- External windows can be protected by bars, window gratings, or polycarbonate sheets.
- Roll down shutters can be considered for both doors and windows.
- Try not to cover the windows with large posters and signage.
- Security alarm – silent or audible (and monitored) - is a good deterrent.
- Make sure the outside of your business is clean and well-maintained, with good lighting; criminals are more attracted to rundown businesses or buildings.
- Good quality CCTV at all entrances to your business recommended.
- Try removing all valuables from the store after closing, or at least remove them from sight.
- Public and employee-only area should be clearly marked.
- Ensure good
key control
– know who has the keys at all times. - If your business is currently closed due to COVID19 situation, check in regularly and note any damage of signs of tampering. Go at different times of the day if you can.
- If there are nearby essential businesses open, perhaps ask them to help keep an eye out on activities around your business.
