Business Watch - Crime Map – July 2019

Business Watch is a partnership between local Burnaby business communities, the City of Burnaby, and the RCMP.

Our goal is to provide tools and resources to help reduce business-related crime. These maps reflect crime trends in the business community. When incidents are reported to police the information is used to deploy resources strategically, identify crime hot spots, and analyze trends and patterns.

Crime Prevention Tips

• Basic threats like unauthorized access to your computer should be tackled immediately before you suffer any loss of information. Hackers are always looking for opportunities to invade privacy and steal data that is of crucial importance, so it is better to take the necessary precautions to protect your company’s valuable information.
• You can minimize the risk of being hacked by using a two-factor authentication for your company. Encourage all employees to use two-factor authentication as it increases security by adding an additional step for accessing accounts. In this particular system, you have to enter a password and you have to enter a code which is sent to your smartphone, something that only you have access to.
• You can have an audit performed by cybersecurity consultants who are experts at protecting your data. In addition to this, you can hire a full-time security officer who will be responsible for handling all security-related problems and ensure the safety of your business.
• In order to keep your company safe and secure from online threats, you need to develop and implement a strong sign-off policy for all employees. This sign-off policy should ensure that the employees return laptops and mobile devices before they leave the premises. In addition to this, the email address that you use must be encrypted so information does not leak and data remains confidential.
