Found human remains

Outer Gulf Islands RCMP attend Strait of Georgia and recover human remains.

On September 2, 2023 at approximately 9:00am Victoria Coast Guard contacted Outer Gulf Island (Pender Island) RCMP to request assistance. A civilian vessel travelling West from Vancouver, had called in and reported finding what they believed to be human remains in the water eleven kilometers West of Tsawwassen ferry terminal. Outer Gulf Island RCMP attended along with Ganges (Salt Spring Island) Coast Guard crew. Police along with Coast Guard arrived in the area shortly after 10:00am. Once on scene police determined the remains were in fact human. With the assistance of West Coast Marine vessel Lindsay, police were able to recover the body. BC Coroners service were contacted, they have taken conduct of the file. Police transported the remains to Sidney BC where the remains were then transported to Victoria General Hospital, pending identification and autopsy to determine if possible the cause of death.  BC Coroners services will be working closely with the RCMP Missing persons Unidentified Human remains unit, to help identify the found remains.
