The Chilliwack RCMP Detachment responded to approximately 320 calls for service between 6:00 am on April 26, 2024 and 4:00 am on April 29, 2024. Below are some of the highlights:

Impaired Driver caught with firearm and illicit substances

On April 29, 2024 at 3:30 am a member of the Chilliwack RCMP conducted a traffic stop with an SUV in downtown Chilliwack. Inside the vehicle was a female driver and two adult passengers. After engaging with the occupants, the officer initiated an impaired driving investigation that lead to an Immediate Roadside Prohibition of the female. During this investigation, a weapon was observed inside the vehicle by police and a subsequent search of the vehicle located additional prohibited weapons, a firearm, and illicit substances. The vehicle has been seized as police further this investigation.

Hit and run investigation leads to discovery of firearms manufacturing

On April 28, 2024 at 9:30 pm police were dispatched to the Garrison neighborhood of Chilliwack after receiving a complaint that a vehicle had side-swiped another vehicle and fled the area. Police were able to locate the suspect vehicle abandoned nearby with damage consistent with the reported collision. A search inside the vehicle located ammunition and 3D printed firearm parts which were seized by police. The investigation continues as police attempt to identify the driver of the vehicle.

Traffic stop locates wanted male and uncovers fraudulent documents

On April 27, 2024 at 5:15 pm a member of the Chilliwack RCMP conducted a traffic stop with a motorcycle near the Chilliwack airport. The officer learned that the male rider, a Moroccan National, had outstanding warrants out of Quebec as well as a Canada-Wide Immigration Warrant. A search of the male incidental to his arrest located numerous fraudulent dentification cards including various drivers licenses from several different provinces. The male was held at the Chilliwack Detachment until the Canada Border Services Agency could take over custody of him. The investigation into the fraudulent ID cards continues.

Bitcoin scam

On April 27, 2024 at 8:00 am a Chilliwack resident reported a fraudulent transaction to the Chilliwack RCMP. The victim had received a call from a suspect stating there had been a fraudulent charge on the victim’s credit card which needed attention. The suspect created a bit coin wallet for the victim and directed them to deposit $5800 through a bit coin machine. This deposit was supposed to resolve the issue, according to the suspect. The suspect initially asked for $10,000 and as the victim was in the process of completing the deposit, they realized it was a scam, only depositing some of the funds.

Overnight theft from vehicle leads to use of owner’s credit card

On April 28, 2024 at 10:50 am the Chilliwack RCMP received a report of a theft from a vehicle in downtown Chilliwack the night before. There were no signs of forced entry, suggesting the vehicle was left unlocked overnight. Numerous items were stolen including the owner’s wallet which contained numerous identification documents as well as sensitive banking information. The owner was instructed to contact his bank right away. Although one of the credit cards had already been used by the thieves, the bank was able to prevent any further transactions.

This serves as a reminder to the public to always lock your vehicles when unattended and to never leave valuables inside.
