File # 2021-414

On January 8, 2021, RCMP Air Services rotary wing aircraft Air 8 assisted North Cowichan Duncan RCMP frontline police officers with the search for an alleged property crime offender around downtown Duncan.

Around 11am, a suspect fled from police during an investigation into stolen goods and possession of property obtained by crime. While police conducted patrols on the ground, Air 8 was nearby and able to do air patrols after temporarily diverting from its initial plan. The pilot did several passes around the area where the suspect was last seen, as the view from the air can often provide clues that police on the ground can’t see.

RCMP Air Services assists frontline police officers around BC with many tasks that help keep communities safe. The rotary wing aircrafts (helicopters) can assist with missing persons investigations and locating remote or concealed crime scenes, and do traffic patrols and enforcement on busy roadways. Pilots, who have the ranks of special constable, also photograph and conduct surveillance in vast areas, and use tools like Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) and high-powered cameras. On Vancouver Island, Air Services is based in Comox and can also transport investigators or dangerous goods quickly and efficiently.

We frequently locate lost hikers and skiers, and assist with ground search and rescue operations, says Comox Air Section base manager S/Cst. Greg Thompson. Assisting units on the ground and public makes our job very rewarding.

Police do not believe that there was a safety risk to the public during the ground or air patrols. Investigators are still attempting to locate the suspect involved in this offence and appreciated cooperation from witnesses.
