Surrey Gang Enforcement Team continues enhanced targeted enforcement
2021-01-12 09:49 PST
Surrey RCMP is continuing on-going strategic enforcement designed to disrupt and suppress gang activity in Surrey.
Over the past two weeks, there have been a number of gang related shootings in communities across the Lower Mainland Region, including three shootings in Surrey.
Each of the recent homicides in Surrey has a nexus to criminal activity or gang activity and because of this, there is potential for further retaliation among individuals involved.
To mitigate the risk of violence in Surrey, the Surrey RCMP has taken direct action to target gang activity. The Surrey Gang Enforcement Team (SGET) has been deployed with an aggressive plan to target criminals who put the community at risk. This plan prioritizes those individuals who pose the highest risk to public safety because of their actions, affiliations, involvement with gangs, and drug trafficking in the province.
Additional officers of the Surrey Gang Enforcement Team will be deployed across the city, increasing the size of teams and reach of officers specialized in gang disruption. These officers will have direct contact with gang members and affiliates in Surrey, through increased curfew checks as well as continued targeted enforcement and vehicle interdictions.
Between January 6 and January 10, 2021, SGET conducted:
- 21 establishment checks for the Inadmissible Patron Program (IPP) resulting in the ejection of 1 person associated to the Lower Mainland Gang Conflict (LMDGC)
- 13 Outlaw Motorcycle Gang clubhouse checks
- 15 curfew checks of LMDGC participants currently living in Surrey
- 9 drug investigations that resulted in the seizure of three vehicles
SGET also initiated enhanced communications with all regional gang units. This included, Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU- BC), Vancouver Police Gang Crime Unit Burnaby RCMP Gang Enforcement Team (BGET), New West Police Gang Suppression Unit, Delta Police Department, and Abbotsford Gang Crime Unit.
In addition, to a strong gang enforcement action plan, Surrey RCMP has multiple youth and family programs, designed specifically for our community. We will continue to work with our partners to deliver gang prevention programs. For more information on all of these programs, visit our Surrey RCMP website.
